What is the Virginia Cow/Calf Management School?
The Virginia Cow/Calf Management School is an intensive course in cow/calf production for Virginia beef producers. The school is designed for beginning to mid-level producers. It will combine home-based learning (correspondance and/or internet) with an optional two day hands-on workshop.
Do I need a computer or internet access?
No, you will be sent written material and a list of instructor's phone numbers will be available for those without internet access. However, you may find it easier to ask questions and may enjoy having internet access to the page. There will be continual changes to the web-page, but success in the course is not dependant on internet access.
You keep calling this a course. Will there be tests?
Yes and no. There will be self-tests or quizzes to help you know whether you are understanding the material or not. You will not need to hand them in, but you will be given an answer sheet for self-grading.
Will I get credit for this school?
You will not get college credit for this school, but you will get a certificate of completion at the end of the course. We are looking into getting discounts for cattle supplies, minerals etc. for people who complete this school.
Do I have to attend VT Cow Camp?
No, you don't have to attend. However, past participants indicated the hands-on portion of the class was the main reason they took the course.
How long will VT Cow Camp last?
VT Cow camp will run from Noon Friday, March 9 to early afternoon Sunday, March 11. The location is the Alphin-Stuart Teaching Arena, VA Tech, Blacksburg, VA
How much will it cost?
The course will cost $50 for the at-home portion, which covers the VA Cow/Calf Management Handbook, mail costs, and associated course development costs. The at-home & VT Cow Camp combination will cost $150, which will cover, supplies, facilities and most meals. Participants are responsible for transportation and lodging.
