DESCRIPTION:

Glossy, green palmately compound leaves.

FOLIAGE COLORS:

Dark Green

CONTAINER:

Large container, large planter.

LIGHT:

Medium to high. Does well near an east, west, or south window, filtered light, or location receiving 1000 footcandles or more.

WATER:

Normal. Water thoroughly, let soil dry to touch to a soil depth of 1/2".

TEMPERATURE:

Medium. 61 - 70 (degrees F) days, 56 - 65 nights.

HUMIDITY:

Average house, fresh air

FERTILIZER:

Every 3 months

SOIL MIX:

1 part sterilized garden loam, 1 part clean coarse sand or Perlite, and 1/2 to 1 part sphagnum peat moss.

PROPOGATION:

Stem cuttings

SELECTION GUIDE:

Select sturdy, shapely, healthy plant free from insect and disease damage. New leaf growth is desirable. Avoid those with yellow or brown leaf margins, wilted or water soaked leaves.

CARE:

Easy. Tolerates wide range of conditions. Good for beginners.

PROBLEMS:

Leaf drop (low humidity): Provide adequate humidity and keep away from heat vents.
Scale insects: Scrape off. Isolate. If severe, dispose of plant.
Weak, spindly growth: Place plant in brighter location.

COMMENTS:

The regular Schefflera (Brassaia actinophylla - Umbrella tree) grows in its natural habitat to over 40' tall. Often used as ground cover or understory plant.
