Primary Program Area Focus: 4-H
Describe the plans for this internship. (i.e. What specifically will the intern be doing?)
In the 2008 situation analysis, two of the top issues identified for Buckingham County were sustainable agriculture and positive youth programming. Hiring a VCE summer intern will enable Virginia Cooperative Extension to provide additional programming during the summer to address these needs. The intern in this position will be spend the majority of his/her time working with the 4-H program, but will also be exposed to Agriculture and Natural Resources and FNP programming and provide assistance as needed.
Late May
- VCE orientation; training on working with youth/positive role modeling.
- Work with Agent and Unit Administrative Assistant to prepare for 4-H Camp, including following up on paperwork.
- Work with 4-H Agent and volunteers to plan and conduct jam making workshops.
- Work with 4-H Agent on in-school programming.
June
- Work with Agent in designing evaluation tools for camps scheduled for the summer.
- Make name tags, class cards, bunk name plates for Jr. 4-H Camp Buckingham & Prince Edward campers, teens & adults.
- Develop lesson plan for class at Jr. 4-H Camp.
- Teach classes at Jr. 4-H Camp, assist where needed during day.
- Work with Agent to plan additional day camps.
- Work with Agent and UAA on preparing and mailing packets for upcoming camps, follow up on missing paperwork.
July

- Compile evaluations from camps.
- Work with Buckingham and Prince Edward 4-H Agents to plan and hold joint canning workshops.
- Work with 4-H Agent to conduct and evaluate day camps.
- Work with 4-H Program Technician to conduct and evaluate Fantastic 4-H Fun Days.
Early August
- Compile evaluations from camps.
- Complete intern evaluation.
Describe the knowledge / skills that the intern is expected to gain from this experience.
The Intern will gain the following knowledge/skills:
- How to interact with others (youth and adults) in a positive manner.
- How to handle difficult situations.
- How to manage time effectively.
- The importance of proper planning and evaluation to reach the desired outcomes.
- The many facets of organizing and running summer youth development programs.
- The contributions VCE makes to the Agriculture community in terms of providing information, education and support.
How will the intern learn about the breadth of VCE and our various program areas?
Through working in a very busy Extension Unit, the Intern will participate in planning, implementing, and evaluating 4-H programs. He/she will be fully immersed in Extension programming and will not only view programming on the unit level, but will help with programs being conducted on a multi-county level as well.
