Primary Program Area Focus: 4-H/Agriculture and Natural Resources/Family and Consumer Sciences

The Greensville/Emporia VCE intern will shadow ANR, FCS, and Community Viability and 4-H program areas. Hiring a VCE summer intern will enable Virginia Cooperative Extension to provide additional programming to the Greensville/Emporia community.
The intern will be expected to meet the following responsibilities:
- Follow the guidelines and policies of VCE.
- Work closely with producers, agri-business, community leaders, Extension Leadership Councils and appropriate agents and specialists to identify and prioritize issues, problems and opportunities.
- Manage and assist volunteers to implement and carry out VCE educational programming in the unit.
- Network and build coalitions with other agencies, organizations and institutions to address agriculture, youth and family issues.
- Develop and implement evaluation plans on a regular basis.
- Develop and deliver objective and research-based educational programs to meet the needs of diverse audiences, specify program goals and objectives, and identify resources needed.
- Assist with providing current research-based information to citizens by employing various delivery methods targeted to diverse audiences; meetings/workshops, short courses, field days, tours, on-farm research, demonstrations, and other appropriate teaching methods.
- Maintain a portfolio/journal of the summer intern experience.
- Attend 4-H camp and other specialty camps, and programs offered by VCE throughout the summer.
- Assist with farm/horticulture demonstrations.
- Assist with FCS programs.
- Willing to assume other duties as necessary
The selected intern will shadow VCE staff three days out of each week. The intern will follow the tentative summer schedule below:
May
June
- Assist volunteers with The Virginia Pork Festival.
- Assist with designing evaluation tools for 4-H summer camp.
- Work with the 4-H and ANR staff to provide programs.
- Assist with weigh-ins for the Greensville/Emporia 4-H Livestock Show.
- Oversee community garden project.
July
- Develop programs in conjunction with the Southside Beekeepers and Master Gardner’s.
- Develop and implement a day workshop in all VCE program areas of ANR, FCS and 4-H.
- Assist with VSU’s 4-H Intermediate Congress.
August
- Assist with the 23rd Greensville/Emporia 4-H Livestock Show.
- Compile evaluations from camps.
- Complete intern evaluation.
- Report on intern experience at the August ELC Meeting.
Describe the knowledge / skills that the intern is expected to gain from this experience.
We hope that the intern will primarily gain knowledge of the role of Virginia Cooperative Extension. It is expected that the intern will be able to gain the following knowledge/skills:
- How to prepare reports and maintain records to report back to stakeholders.
- How to develop effective programs for the public.
- How to manage time effectively.
- How to work as a team player in an office environment and assist with the daily logistics of maintaining an office.
- How to select appropriate curriculum to serve the local clientele.
How will the intern learn about the breadth of VCE and our various program areas.
The intern will shadow agents in the unit, implement programs in all VCE program areas, and be required to keep a journal of their experiences during the summer. The intern will provide a report at the August ELC meeting to our stakeholders about their experiences.
