Primary Program Area Focus: 4-H/Agriculture and Natural Resources

Describe the plans for this internship.  (i.e. What specifically will the intern be doing?)

The VCE summer intern in Scott County will be provided an opportunity to observe and participate in the county Extension program under the direction and supervision of local Extension Agents. Duties during this internship will include:

Agriculture:

  • Monitor local crops for diseases, insects, and cultural issues with the local agent and/or small farm technician.
  • Observe and assist with program meetings such as soil and water conservation meetings, field days, cattle association activities, etc.
  • Assist with Master Gardener programming and activities.

4-H:

  • Assist with summer day camps.
  • Assist and evaluate new robotics training program for 4-H robotics volunteers.
  • Observe & assist with 4-H horse, livestock, companion animal, outdoor adventure, and/or shooting sports club meetings.
  • Attend and assist with 4-H Camp.

FCS:

  • Assist and observe programming such as Master Food Volunteer, in Scott County.

Describe the knowledge / skills that the intern is expected to gain from this experience.

The intern will be involved with program planning and evaluation, will be able to practice communication skills, and improve basic culinary and agriculture skill set.

How will the intern learn about the breadth of VCE and our various program areas?

Through a comprehensive, hands-on experience in all program areas, the intern should gain a good working knowledge of all areas and aspects of Virginia Cooperative Extension as outlined in the plans discussion.
