Who should attend:
Anyone interested in learning more about the basic techniques of production and propagation required to successfully operate a commercial greenhouse business.

What is covered:
The "Getting Started in the Greenhouse Business" School is a two-day information packed program designed for persons thinking about getting into the greenhouse business, new greenhouse operators or employees, and persons interested in learning the basics of selecting and managing the greenhouse production system. Topics on day one include: greenhouse structures, environmental control and irrigation systems, water, media and fertility management, insect and disease identification and management, weed management, and greenhouse pesticide safety and regulations. Day two topics include: business plan development, cost accounting, marketing, helpful websites, and an overview of the production of bedding plants, greenhouse vegetables, cut flowers, and nursery crops. Registration fee includes the ~300-page Greenhouse Operator's Training Manual published by the Virginia Flower Growers Association, as well as Round-table luncheons with speakers and established growers. Registration is limited to the first 30 participants.

The Plant Propagation School is a full-day training in basic plant propagation featuring hands-on training in propagation of annuals, foliage plants, perennials, and semi-woody flowering shrubs. Program also includes lectures covering basic propagation principles, propagation systems, and seed propagation of annuals and perennials. Included in the registration fee is lunch, breaks, all propagation supplies, and plant material. Registration is limited to the first 30 participants.

The 3-day program will be held on the campus and in the greenhouse at:

J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College - Western Campus, at 3078 River Road West in Goochland CH; 804-662-6400 on August 14-16, 2001,

AND

Tidewater Community College, 1428 Cedar Rd., Chesapeake; 757-822-5149 on September 19-21, 2001. See the program for specific times.

The classes will be taught by Virginia Tech, Virginia State University and JSRCC or TCC faculty, members of the Virginia Flower Growers Association, industry experts and invited leaders in the field of floriculture.
