Faculty recognized with Extension Excellence awards

Jinx Baney and Ames Herbert are the recipients of the 2006 Virginia Tech Alumni Award for Extension Excellence. Each year, one agent and one specialist are recognized for their outstanding contributions to the land-grant mission of the university. Nominees are evaluated on their innovation, creativity, program results, and other impacts of their efforts.

Baney, 4-H youth development agent and unit coordinator of the Brunswick County office, was recognized for her profound impact on the lives of youth throughout Virginia. She boosted local involvement in 4-H programs and reached 200 fourth and fifth graders as well as being instrumental in obtaining a $75,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to address her county’s unique needs.

Herbert, Extension entomologist and professor at the Tidewater Agricultural Research and Extension Center, was recognized for his work on integrated pest management and his program to educate crop producers about the economic value of applying pesticide on an as-needed basis. He manages more than $145,000 in federal funds each year and has helped Virginians adopt practices that foster the reduced use of pesticides and ultimately, a reduction of pesticides in the environment.
