Veterinary Science

The 4-H Animal Science programs provide a wide variety and depth of educational opportunities for youth, most of which involve working directly with live animals of all types.

These projects teach:
A. Responsible care and well-being of animals.
B. Life Skills like decision-making and communication skills through judging events and oral presentations.
C. Awareness of the practices in Animal Agriculture.
D. The safe and appropriate use of animal products.
E. Scientific principles.

The 4-H Animal Science Programs allow the youth to practice and demonstrate what they learn at numerous supporting activities like fairs, judging contests, shows, educational bowls and presentation contests. Virginia has a very successful record in these competitions at the regional and national levels.

These programs also help youth become aware of career opportunities in the animal agricultural industries which represents 57% of the total income from agriculture in Virginia. Virginia's animal agriculture industries strongly support these program areas.

Take a closer look at the many opportunities waiting for you in the 4-H Animal Science Programs.

  • Character Education in 4-H Livestock Projects
Cutting corners to win is not the right way. Everyone involved in youth livestock projects (members, parents, leaders, agents) should be aware of the damage that can be done to these programs by unethical behavior. Here is a list of materials available that deals with this important topic.
    • A Question of Ethics (20 minutes)
    • A Step Beyond a Question of Ethics (23 minutes)
    • The Line in the Sand (16 minutes)

Facilitator Guides and videos can be borrowed from Dr. Mark Wahlberg (wahlberg@vt.edu).

  • Showing Character. A series of activity based lesson plans Developed by LSU 4-H stressing character development in young people and adults working together in the livestock industry. One copy was sent to each extension office in 2002.
  • 4-H Virtual Farm- Brings the farm to the classroom. http://www.ext.vt.edu/resources/4h/virtualfarm/index.html
The U.S. continues to become a more urbanized society, and youth growing up today have little knowledge about farming or how food products are produced and processed. The objective of the 4-H Virtual Farm is to provide youth with a fun, interactive web-based learning experience that introduces the basic concepts of agricultural production. The learning experiences found in the 4-H Virtual Farm complement the existing educational programs provided through 4-H and are consistent with the Virginia Standards of Learning.

The 4-H Virtual Farm at www.ext.vt.edu/resources/4h/virtualfarm features Virginia farms and farmers. This learning environment places youth in the role of agricultural producers by creating virtual reality farm visits composed of text, graphics, audio, video, and immerse imaging. Through interactive problem-based lessons students: (1) investigate and learn the importance of agricultural production cycles; (2) appreciate the economic impact of agriculture; (3) gain an introduction to agricultural careers; (4) form an awareness of natural resources in relationship to agriculture; and (5) understand the importance of producing a safe food supply. Focusing on different livestock and crop enterprises, students become aware of the science, math, and management skills needed to run a modern farm operation.

Horse and Pony
Emphasis is on equine selection, nutrition, management, riding, recreation, fun, and horsemanship. Horseback riding provides an outdoor sports fitness program for physical, personal, and emotional development, including confidence building. The sport can develop into a life-long hobby or business. Projects are available for youth owning or having access to horses and to youth not having access to horses (horseless horse projects).

Poultry
Poultry projects are developed to help stimulate an interest in science, consumerism, and animal husbandry. The brooding/rearing projects help youth learn responsibilities, skills, and knowledge through caring for their birds and learning to manage their time and finances. The poultry and egg consumer projects teach youth how to be better consumers and to increase their knowledge of poultry eggs and cookery skills. The in-school "Beginning of Life" project uses the avian egg to teach youth scientific processes, reproduction, and respect for living things by using hands-on activities.
