The Virginia 4-H Natural Resources and Environmental Education (NREE) curriculum area includes six major components:
Wildlife
Forestry
Fishing
Shooting Education
Outdoor Adventure
Wood Sciences

Each of these project areas offers opportunities for youth to be involved in hands-on learning through project books, training programs, specialty camps, contests, workshops, field days and presentations.

Programs in each of these six component areas are managed by a sub-committee under the coordinating efforts of the overall EENR curriculum committee. Typically, the sub-committees and their internal working groups provide volunteer training sessions, operate specialty camps, develop curriculum materials, conduct contests, sponsor workshops and field days, and provide other nuts-and-bolts program leadership.

Additional Resources

4-H Forestry Judging
http://www.ext.vt.edu/resources/4h/environment/forjudging/ 4-H Forestry judging is a national competition that involves the following eight components: Tree Identification, Tree Measurement, Forest Evaluation, Compass Orienteering, Forest Insect and Disease Identification, Forestry Bowl, and a Forestry Written Exam

Youth compete in teams of three or four. Team scores are based on the top three individual scores in each category, with the exception of forestry bowl and evaluation, which are completed as a team. There are two age groups: juniors (age 9-13) and seniors (age 14-19). Ages are calculated on Jan. 1 of the contest year. Team members typically come form the same county, though adjacent counties may combine if necessary.

The Invitational is sponsored by the International Paper Company Foundation through the Cooperative Extension Service

The purpose of 4-H forestry judging is to develop appreciation for the importance of conserving forestland as a source of products, benefits, and services necessary for quality living. 4-H Foresters learn citizenship and leadership skills as well as practical forest management skills. By learning these skills young people will be better prepared to own forestland or deal with environmental issues in the future.

The National 4-H Forestry Invitational is the national championship of 4-H forestry. Each year, since 1980, teams of 4-H Foresters have come to Jackson's Mill State 4-H Conference Center at Weston, WV, to meet, compete, and have fun. Jackson's Mill is the boyhood home of General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, hero of the Civil War, and a historic setting for the Invitational. Jackson's Mill State 4-H Conference Center is the first and oldest 4-H camp in the United States and is operated by West Virginia University.

Forestry Camp
http://www.ext.vt.edu/resources/4h/environment/camp/ For over 50 years Holiday Lake Forestry Camp has introduced young Virginians to the challenges, special skills and knowledge needed for managing the forest resources we use and enjoy every day. Administered by the Holiday Lake 4-H Educational Center in cooperation with natural resources conservation agencies and organizations, the Camp is designed for students who:

  • want to explore and experience activities in forestry and wildlife related careers
  • participate in forestry and wildlife judging teams, Envirothon competitions, or ecology clubs
  • have a special interest in hands on learning about natural resources conservation

Camp is held at the Holiday Lake 4-H Educational Center located within the 20,000 acre Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest. This working forest provides a vast outdoor classroom for interactive learning. Classes are taught in the woods by professional foresters, wildlife biologists, and conservation resource specialists.

  • FORESTRY OUTREACH http://www.fw.vt.edu/dendro/forsite/welcome.htm

This is a series of scientific investigations dealing with forestry. Although designed for middle schools, any 4-H group or individual may participate. Students collect, report and analyze data over the internet with help from faculty members and students at Virginia Tech. Investigations include:

    • American Chestnut Project
    • Acorn Study
    • Biodiversity
    • Roadkill Survey
  • BIG TREE PROGRAM (age 9-19))

Youth are encouraged to search for the big trees in their county and to start a county big tree registry. http://www.cnr.vt.edu/4h/bigtree/

  • PROJECT LEARNING TREE http://www.cnr.vt.edu/plt/

PLT is a national environmental educational curriculum that uses the forest as a "window to the world". Educators must complete free six-hour training before receiving the 402 page K-8 Activity Guide or the Secondary Modules. All PLT activities have been correlated to the Virginia Standards of Learning.

Outdoor Adventure
Program includes backpacking, camping, climbing, canoeing, and other adventure activities. Skill development and group dynamics are emphasized. Contact Michelle Adcock for volunteer leader training dates.

Your first contact for more information is: Your local Virginia Cooperative Extension office.

WHEP is a competitive event that teaches the fundamentals of managing fish and wildlife habitat. It is commonly referred to as "Wildlife judging." A WHEP Handbook is available as a 150 pp. bound hard copy or as a CD. Any Extension Office that has not yet received an updated manual and wishes to have one should contact Jennifer Mercer at jamercer@vt.edu. Indicate hard copy format or the CD version. Counties are encouraged to send Extension Agents, Adult Volunteers and 4-H Members to the Wildlife Weekend in January held at Holiday Lake 4-H Educational Center to learn how to best utilize the manual to prepare for the State WHEP Contest in May.
