Web sites linked here list books and videos that are good resources for working with youth horticulture and gardening.

Books

  • The Montessori Garden - The Montessori Garden is a 45 page, spiral-bound manual containing everything you need to get started including 32 detailed garden exercises. These exercises can be packaged and stored in the garden, allowing children to be self-paced and self-directed in their garden activities.

  • The American Community Gardening Association has several publications on growing communities through gardening for sale. They also have two issues of their annual publication on-line for free viewing, one of which is dedicated to school gardening. (takes about a minute to download)

  • The on-line Teacher Resource Guide from the California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom (CFAITC) is a a comprehensive list of existing resources to help educators incorporate agricultural topics into their curriculum.

  • CFAITC's on-line Garden & Nutrition Resource Catalog gives reviews and ordering information of about 60 resources in this subject area for primary and secondary school students.

  • Virginia Tech lists many good gardening books for children along with their publisher information and targeted age group. Most of these are activity guide books.

  • Texas A& M also has a list of good gardening books for children listed with the authors' names. Some are fictional and some are instruction books.

  • Univ. of Massachusetts's Extension Publications for K-12 includes contains a list of resource books for order from them. Most books cover topics in nature or ecology, with several specifically about plants and gardening.

  • Journey to Forever has a list of children's gardening books and resources. Some are available on-line but most are for order (or you could just buy in a store).
