4-H Project Explore Science Camp!

43 youth and adult volunteers participated in the Airfield 4-H Center’s annual earth science camp entitled “4-H Project Explore: Discovering the Earth’s Secrets.”  Participants in the weekend camp, held April 4-5, 2008, ranged in ages from 8 to 13 years old and came from all over southeastern Virginia.  During their camping experience, the campers constructed and launched model rockets and they participated in hands-on workshops in electricity, environment and pollution, meteorology, and snakes of Virginia.

The goal of the 4-H Project Explore camp was to increase the youth’s knowledge and interest in science, an area that many children do not excel at in school.  Many of the participants reported that they knew more about the identified science topics after their involvement in the 4-H Project Explore camp than they did prior to their participation.  For more information about this camp or any of the other educational camps the Airfield 4-H Center offers throughout the year, please contact Erin Bain, Program Director, at 757-899-4901, ext. 305.

Some photos from the weekend are included below!

This year’s theme was “Little People Making a Difference in a Big Way” and the camp certainly lived up to its’ name!  Classes for youth included:  Archery, Community Service, Cooking, Arts & Crafts, and Nature Studies.  Highlights of the weekend included a special Valentine’s Day party, a Carnival, and even a Magic Show!  Youth also had a campfire and participated in other traditional camp activities.  Cloverbud camp is held at the center in February and July of each year.  For more information about the next Cloverbud weekend, please contact your local 4-H Extension office or the 4-H Center at (757)899-4901.
