Virginia Supreme Court Chief Justice Harry Carrico (center) accepts the first Centennial Celebration pin from the president of the State Cabinet, Jody Neuhauser, of Barboursville, a student at the University of Virginia as Howard Taylor, Rockingham County watches.
4-H members visited their Senators (above) Charles Hawkins, 20th district, and (below) Rosco Reynolds, 19th district, when they were at Richmond for Virginia's Conversation on Youth Development. The Conversation on Youth is a project in honor of National 4-H's Centennial year.
The Conversations brought together youth as well as adults working with youth, to put together a list of what is needed for youth to realize their potential. Throughout the fall, Conversations were held in Virginia counties and that information was brought together for the state agenda. Virginia's information will be added to that of all the other states and presented to national policy leaders at a conference Feb. 27 to March 1 at Washington, D.C.
The themes of the Conversations are: the power of youth; access, equity and opportunity; an extraordinary place to live and learn; exceptional people, innovative practices, and effective organizational systems
The 4-H Centennial celebration also is featuring how youth contribute to their communities. At each of the county sessions, youth made pledges of work they do to make their communities better places to live. These pledges which range from helping at day care to helping senior citizens, also are summarized so that policy makers can see what youth do.
