The Virginia Visit

Virginia and Costa Rica youth toured the Brooks Forest Products Lab on the Virginia Tech campus as part of the State 4-H Congress. Here they are learning how an electron microscope is used to develop new applications for wood. Youth are taught that wood is a global resource and are urged to think of forestry as a sustainable natural resource.

Professor Robert Shaffer (in center) of Virginia Tech emphasizes a point about timber harvesting at a logging site in southwest Virginia. Youth observed different phases of mechanized harvesting, and observed the results of reforestation on the industry-owned land.
