Animal Science Learning Laboratory Kits Procedures for Use

  1. The Learning Laboratory Kits (Beef, Sheep, Swine, Dairy, Horse, Goat, Rabbit, Poultry, and Dog) purchased by the Animal Science Curriculum Committee will be housed at the Extension Distribution Center (EDC) located at the 112 Landsdowne Street, Blacksburg, VA 24061 (540-231-1322).
  2. A Learning Laboratory Kit can be requested for use for one month by an Extension Agent or Staff member by contacting the EDC. The EDC will be responsible for shipping via UPS the Kits to only agent/staff who request them (volunteer leaders must work with their agent to request kits). If the kit does not arrive in a timely fashion the agent/staff member should contact Gary Kinsley (540-231-1321) so the kit can be tracked, (normal delivery is 1 day to most extension offices). If a request is made and the Kit is being used at another Extension Office, the EDC may make arrangements to have the Kit shipped from one Extension Office to the other.
  3. When a Kit is to be returned or forwarded to another Extension Office, the Extension Office that is currently using the Kit will need to contact the EDC. When contacted, the Distribution Center will then generate an UPS label that will be emailed to the caller once the UPS system is shut down for that day. The person will then attach the label to the box the Kit is in. At this point, DO NOT call UPS to pick up the Kit; wait until a UPS employee is in the Extension Office to deliver something else and them ask them the take to Kit to be mailed. (If you call UPS to come pick up the Kit to be mailed, additional fees will be charged, and it will complicate the process.)
  4. The requesting Agent/Staff member is responsible for the material in the Kit while it is being used in their county. The agent/staff member is responsible for reviewing the inventory checklist of the items in the Kits (it is located in the Assembly instructions guide under Contents) when the Kit is received and when the Kit is mailed back to the Distribution Center or to another office. If an item is not in the Kit when received, please email the Animal Science Curriculum Committee Chair to let them know the item is missing. The Distribution Center is not responsible for items missing from the Kits. The Kits contain many small pieces. A well-kept inventory will help minimize loss.
