The Virginia Poultry Federation (VPF) held its annual Youth Convention at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds. Over 150 Future Farmers of America and 4-H youth, ranging in age from 11 to 18, came from all across the state to participate in poultry judging contests and educational activities.
During the convention, VPF President Hobey Bauhan presented Grayson County Extension Agent Jimmy Osborne with its prestigious "Eddie Mason Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to Poultry Youth Programs." The VPF established the annual award in 1997 to honor Eddie Mason of WLR Foods, who died in 1999, for his dedication to and support of poultry youth programs in the poultry industry for over twenty years.
A veteran poultry judging coach, Mr. Osborne has sent 22 youth to the National 4-H Contest in the past 14 years. Ten of these youth placed in the top 20 at the national event. His teams have placed first and third twice in the last 10 years. He has also coached the top individual winner at the national level twice. Mr. Osborne has been a county Extension Agent in Southwest Virginia for 27 years. He is a 1973 graduate of Virginia Tech. Congratulations Jimmy!

The Virginia 4-H Foundation recently received the largest single gift from an individual when the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences proposed to give a portion of the donation provided by the Mellon Estate. The Foundation received $250,000 from the Mellon Estate to support the equine endowment fund. Throughout his life Mr. Mellon was a renowned horse enthusiast.
Virginia Power, Richmond, Va, has been a long time supporter of the Virginia 4-H Foundation. In May, Virginia Power will present the Foundation with a $18,500 grant to support electrical energy education. New York, June 1, 2000….. A Dublin 4-H Club has won a national award in the 27th annual search for the country's best community projects by young Americans. The Dublin Community Triple A 4-H Club joined forces with Carilion Saint Albans Hospital to support the Women's Resource Center with its "Forget-Me-Not Project", during the 1999 Christmas season, and have won high honors in the 2000 "Colgate Youth for America" campaign.
The announcement was made in New York today by young cast members of "Beverly Hills 90210," Ian Ziering, Luke Perry, Lindsay Price and Vincent Young, this year's celebrity judging panel for the program which encourages responsibility in young people.
Club leaders, Cindy Allen and Sandy Steele said, "We're just elated for our club members! The club celebrated its first year anniversary in November, and we're really proud of their efforts and support of Carilion Saint Albans Hospital and the Women's Resource Center." The joint effort raised $815, as well as other donated items for the Women's Resource Center, "Project Hope". As part of the club "Forget-Me-Not Project", members made gingerbread Christmas ornaments for a tree on display in the lobby of Carilion Saint Albans Hospital, representing 116 children who benefited from "Project Hope" in the past. The ornaments served as a token for employees who made individual contributions to "Project Hope".
For their efforts, the Triple A 4-H Club of Pulaski County was voted a $100 fourth prize in the 27th annual Colgate Youth for America campaign.
U.S. clubs and troops of six national youth organizations (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire, Girls Incorporated, 4-H, and Boys and Girls Clubs) are invited to enter their best community service projects in this annual Colgate campaign. Cash grants are awarded for the best projects in each of the organizations. To date, Colgate-Palmolive Company has awarded more than $5.5 million to America's young people through "Youth for America". The program has been honored by The White House under five different administrations, has received a Freedoms Foundation Award and is praised each year by members of Congress and countless governors and mayors throughout the nation.
In discussing the 27th annual campaign, the program's Executive Director, Jennifer Marcus Barbara, commented, "Youth for America puts special young people in the spotlight for their positive efforts toward improving their world. It recognizes and rewards their creative solutions to the problems in their communities. Hopefully it also inspires others to follow their lead and get involved in service programs in their hometowns."
Entry forms for the 2000/01 28th annual "Youth for America" campaign will be available this Fall through local offices of the six national youth organizations or by sending a stamped self-addressed envelope to Colgate Youth for America at P. O. Box 1058, FDR Station, New York, NY 10150-1058. At the Colgate-Palmolive web site, www.colgatepalmolive.com, you can click on "Colgate Cares" for further details, view a complete list of winners and print an entry form for next year's competition.

From time to time, it is important to update information as to who is doing what at our 4-H educational centers. Since we have several new Extension staff, this information is especially important as we are preparing to launch another summer 4-H camping season.

The pillar of RESPONSIBILITY involves doing what you are supposed to do; fulfilling obligations; following through on commitments; being accountable for your own actions; using self-control; being self-disciplined; persevere: keep on trying!; always do your best.
Ancient proverb -
"You cannot do anything by doing nothing."
LeVar Burton -
"The most worthwhile endeavor I have ever undertaken is responsibility for my own life."
Josiah Charles Stamp -
"It is easy to dodge our responsibilities but we cannot dodge the consequences of dodging our responsibilities."
What does it mean to be a responsible person?
Responsibility Do's:
Responsibility Don'ts:
Each of us should challenge ourselves to follow these basic principles of old responsibility in our professional and personal lives. Not only are others likely to view us in a positive light, but we will feel good about ourselves as well. "Elizabeth Sykes" 4-H/CHARACTER COUNTS!
