Believe it or not, as Ripley always said, the next NCI is just around the corner. Minnesota is hosting this fourth event, designed to bring the best and brightest ideas on camping to one central location. National 4-H Camping Institute IV is scheduled to be held September 25-28, 1997, at the Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, Minnesota, for salaried and volunteer adults. The Virginia delegation is working to secure funding to support a Camping Study Tour to travel to and from this great learning experience. If you are planning to attend, or want further information on this event, please get in touch with me right away. Bob Meadows

The State Fair is fast approaching. The dates are September 25 through October 5. By now all Extension offices should have received at least one copy of the Youth Competition Guide for the 1997 State Fair. This document contains all program details for the youth portion of the fair and information about entering and tickets. In a companion book, called the Competition Guide, is information about the open competitions. Although all portions of the book can be photocopied, if you need additional books or additional entry forms then contact Lil Reynolds at the Fair at 804/228-3237. Livestock Shows - Entries for livestock are due by August 15. The form is 8 1/2 X 14 on yellow paper and found in the Youth Competition Guide between pages 68 and 69. Photocopies of this form are acceptable. Extension Agents must sign the entry form for 4-Hers from their county. Your signature indicates that you have verified the age of the exhibitor, the fact that they are enrolled 4-H'ers in your county, and that the information about the animals is correct. Entries for each junior show are mailed to different places, as follows: Beef Dr. Mark Wahlberg, An Sci. Dept, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24061-0306 Sheep Dr. Steve Umberger, An Sci. Dept, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24061-0306 Swine State Fair of VA, Dept D-2, PO Box 26805, Richmond, VA 23261-6805 Any assistance you can provide to your 4-H'ers about the State Fair will be greatly appreciated by those of us who are working with shows held there. Stockmen's Contest - A thorough test of knowledge in all aspects of livestock is the Junior Stockmen's Contest. This contest is for youth who are members of either the 4-H or FFA organizations. It is held at the State Fair, this year on Friday, October 3. Information on the contest is found in the 1997 Youth Competition Guide on pages 24-25. Entries are due into my office by September 12. This entry needs to include only the number of contestants in each age division (junior or senior) and a name and address for the coach. In response to this information, passes to the fair will mailed along with a detailed entry form which the teams will bring with them to the contest. There is a limit of 2 senior teams and 2 junior teams from each county or FFA chapter. A team is a maximum of 4 members, thus each group may enter a maximum of 8 contestants in each age division. Please work with the coaches of stockmen's teams in your unit to ensure they do not miss this entry deadline. Mark Wahlberg

After overnight and orientation at a Richmond hotel, the visitors will travel to their host family homes on July 23 for their stay until August 19. Bland county, with four host families, boasts the highest number this year. Host family orientations are being held across the state, and are being conducted by: Dottie Nelson, Brenda Briggs, Frances Morris, Judy Ann Fray, Tom Baker, Carol and Rory Nansel and Richard Funkhouser. Robert Sexton, former LABO Intern in Japan, and Daniel Graves, a former 4-H delegate to Japan with the LABO Program, will assist members of the Virginia 4-H/Japanese Exchange committee with orientation of the Japanese youth. Richard Funkhouser and six 4-H members from Shenandoah county will depart on July 14 for their month-long stay in Japan. This group has been extremely busy with their fund-raising this past year, and earned almost all of the $2,460 necessary for each 4-H'er. Those interested in more information about the 4-H/Japanese Exchange Program and the proposed 4-H project, "Learning About Japan", should contact any one of the 4-H/Japanese Committee members or Judy Ann Fray at (540)948-4220.
