1999 Holiday Message

Thanks to each of you, this past year has truly been a great one for Virginia 4-H. Our 1999 4-H Enrollment figures are in and once again we have seen an increase in the number of Virginia youth enrolled as 4-H members. This year 4-H enrollment jumped to 127,520 youth. There was also a significant increase of nearly 5,000 adults (16,269 total), that volunteered to support our educational programs. Our camping program continued to grow through our six 4-H Educational Centers. We now have the second largest camping program in the nation. In addition, private sector partners invested almost $10 million dollars to support 4-H programs at the local, district, and state level. It was indeed a banner year.

However, these numbers only reflect a piece of the story. Rarely does a day go by that I don't receive a note or run into someone who is quick to tell me how 4-H has made a significant positive impact upon his or her life. I believe this is why all of us have chosen this great profession. I am truly grateful for all you do to make things happen.

Finally, it is my sincerest wish that the holiday season brings a time of peace and renewal to you and your family as we move forward into the new millennium of "Making the Best Better".

4-H Collegiate Host Weekend

The Collegiate 4-H Club of Virginia Tech will be conducting its annual Host Weekend on the campus of Virginia Tech, Thursday - Saturday, February 3-5, 2000. This event is designed for high school aged youth from throughout the Commonwealth, and the time is now to begin promoting this opportunity to your 4-H teen members, 10th grade and above.

The purposes of this event include providing an opportunity for older youth to experience a taste of college life, to actually attend a couple of classes with host Collegiate 4-H'ers, to participate in fun and challenging events and activities on a college campus, and to stay with students in dorms. For the past several years, many high school students have greatly benefited from this experience.

All visiting high school participants in Host Weekend will be supervised and assisted by members of the Collegiate 4-H Club of Virginia Tech, and plans are well on the way for an exciting, fun, and challenging weekend here on campus. Be sure to look in your mail for the forthcoming 4-H Host Weekend brochure, which will provide all details of this event. We hope to have a record attendance this coming year.

4-H Camping News

Thanks to your hard work and recruiting efforts, Virginia's 4-H camping program was a great success. The total for the 1999 4-H year, including residential (overnight) and day camping sessions involved 30,395 participants in 373 separate events.

This sets a new record for us in Virginia, and includes youth from every unit that Extension serves in the Commonwealth. Although the data from other states has not been received to date, we currently have the second highest 4-H camping numbers in the nation. Keep up the good work-thanks for all you do to help youth receive an experience of a lifetime, 4-H camping.
