Leadership and Personal Development

Leadership:
1. The position, function, or guidance of a leader.
2. Ability to lead.

Leadership and Personal Development are closely tied together. Leadership, as defined, is the "position, function, or guidance of a leader; ability to lead. " Personal Development, in this document's confines, are those characteristics of self-confidence needed to enable the development of knowledge and skills for leadership.

Although three out of four adolescents engage in little or no risky behavior, the remaining one in four adolescents are in significant trouble. One in four youth abuse drugs, lags in school or get in trouble with the law. In addition, an enormous number of children experiment with drugs and alcohol, cheat at school, and are generally rude.

In the process of gaining Independence and the establishment of a Democracy, the basis upon which the Founding Fathers operated was one of an informed and educated public - where leadership and decision-making is to be shared among the masses. This is reflected in identification of public education, a concept underlining the importance that The Public is - and should be - part of education. The legacy established has always been based on "We, the People," not "I, a few leaders." Thus, leadership abilities and those skills needed for participatory decision-making is mandatory in a functioning Democracy and for strong communities in the 21St Century.
