Rita Schalk, 4-H Extension Agent in Hanover county, received the invitation from a representative of the city of Ozyorsk and the Municipal Youth Sports School of Atoms located nearby (see map). The representative, Maria Andreevna Kvokotova, spent a year with Rita's sister's family in 1995 as a participant in the US State Department program called FLEX. Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) was established in 1992 as the centerpiece of the New Independent States Secondary School Initiative with FREEDOM Support Act funding from the State Department and USAID. Its goal is to provide an opportunity for high school students from the countries of the former Soviet Union to experience life in a democratic society in order to promote democratic values and institutions in Eurasia.
Virginia 4-H recruits families to host FLEX students each year. Learn more about this opportunity by clicking here.
Maria now is a college graduate, an entrepreneur and interpreter with an abiding interest and affection for the U.S. She has helped to arrange for home city of Ozyorsk to bear the cost of feeding, housing, transporting and entertaining the Virginia delegation. The delegation is responsible for its own airfare and personal expenses. Besides visiting the region around Ozyorsk, the delegation will also visit Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Follow the adventures and learning experiences of these 4-H members and leaders while they are on their trip. Daily journal entries and photos will be posted below as often as the delegation can send them to us.
