Adult Programs
Elderhostel is a non-profit organization committed to being the preeminent provider of high quality, affordable, educational opportunities for senior adults. Founded in 1975, Elderhostel programs were originally based on a few college and university campuses in New England. Today, Elderhostel serves hundreds of thousands of older adult students who travel to residential programs throughout the US and the world. The Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center has been offering Elderhostel programs since 1988. There are approximately 9-12 various programs at the 4-H Center annually. Dulcimer Discoveries - April 13-19, 2008
This is a great opportunity to learn to advance your playing skills on either the lap or hammered dulcimer! A team of two instructors will offer a variety of classes to give you new directions to explore on your musical journey. Instruction will be offered for the advanced beginner skill level during this week and cover a wide variety of methods to enhance your dulcimer music. While here, take time to explore historic Abingdon, Virginia and visit the world famous Barter Theatre.
Biking The Virginia Creeper Trail And Naturalist Study In The Southern Blue Ridge Mountains - April 20-26, 2008
Enjoy scenic treks down the "Creeper", a retired railway corridor of the Virginia-Carolina Railroad. Enjoy a lovely mountain bike ride as you explore the history of railroading in Southwest Virginia while traveling over trestles and around mountains.
Mountain bikes will be provided and fitted to meet the needs of each participant. Almost all terrain is level or downhill (less than 3% grade). Participants will experience elevations of over 3000 feet.
Sawing, Strumming, And Singing: Building An Appalachian Instrument - May 4-10, 2008
Build a mandolin, learn to play it, and immerse yourself in traditional Appalachian culture and music. Construct an Appalachian mandolin of solid native hardwoods and learn the basics of playing this instrument under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Even an inexperienced woodworker will be able to create an instrument to treasure and enjoy for a lifetime. Materials, tools, and supplies will be provided to construct one instrument per team of two persons. The mandolin will belong to the team. It is possible for an individual to complete the project, but it is significantly more work. There will be an additional charge for singles wishing to build individual instruments.
Individuals wishing to build their own instrument will be charged an additional $75, payable on arrival, to cover the full cost of the instrument. Couples wishing to build two instruments will be charged $75 each.
