Karen Gehrt named FCS Associate Director

Karen Gehrt

Karen Gehrt is the new associate director of Family and Consumer Sciences programs for Virginia Cooperative Extension. In her position, she serves as state program leader for the development and delivery of educational programs that meet the needs of Virginia’s families and communities.

“I am both pleased and excited to have Karen join our administrative team,” says Mark McCann, director of Virginia Cooperative Extension. “She brings a unique combination of talent and experiences to the position.”

When commenting on her new role, Gehrt says, “I am thrilled to be a part of Virginia Cooperative Extension. I believe that Family and Consumer Sciences programs incorporate prevention and intervention components that are key to strengthening Virginia families.”

Gehrt previously worked for the Food and Nutrition Service at the USDA where she served as a WIC program specialist in the Midwest Regional Office.

Gehrt’s previous roles include program development and marketing consultant for Lifespan Wellness, associate director of the Fisher Institute for Wellness at Ball State University, and 23 years as an Extension educator for University of Illinois Extension.

She received a bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has been a registered, licensed dietician since 1981.
